You can save pictures in GIF format with or without transparency. If you save a picture that contains transparent areas as a transparent .gif file, the background of your document or Web page shows through the transparent areas of your picture. If you choose not to retain the transparency of your picture, the areas surrounding the objects in your picture are filled with a solid color.
